Leading Māori scholars, researchers and writers of history come together in this landmark collection of essays celebrating three decades of Indigenous scholarship.

Maranga! Maranga! Maranga! The Call to Māori History draws from the work of Te Pouhere Kōrero, the Māori history collective. Edited by Aroha Harris (Te Rarawa, Ngāpuhi) and Melissa Matutina Williams (Te Rarawa, Ngāti Maru), this book curates key works first published in the group’s journal Te Pouhere Kōrero – Māori History, Māori People, emphasising the foundational role of Māori history in shaping Aotearoa New Zealand.

Examining histories that span from moko kauae and reo Māori to the myth of Māori privilege, these essays explore subjects that include the teaching of iwi history, the role of memory and storytelling, and the integration of mātauranga within historical scholarship. Wide-ranging in both form and scope, Maranga! Maranga! Maranga! presents transformative approaches to history and makes a significant contribution to our contemporary understanding of Aotearoa’s past.

Te Pouhere Kōrero operates as a broad collective of Māori colleagues interested in history. It was established in November 1992, at an inaugural hui convened at Rongopai Marae, near Gisborne, Aotearoa New Zealand. It is a Māori collective that operates explicitly for Māori, by Māori and about Māori. In March 2023, the collective gathered in Wellington to celebrate decades of collaboration, marking the launch of Volume 10 of their journal Te Pouhere Kōrero – Māori History, Māori People and the digital publication of all ten volumes.
